After having a piercing, the area may slightly bleed. This should normally stop after a few minutes, it may bleed again for short periods of time over the next few days. There may also be some clear or white-yellow odourless discharge that forms a crust over the jewellery during the first few days after a piercing. This is normal and not a sign of infection.

Please don’t touch any crust that forms, as it can help to protect against infection. A new piercing can be tender, itchy and bruised for a few weeks after it is carried out. It’s important to take care of your piercing to reduce chances of problems developing. Other than cleaning you should NOT be touching the fresh piercing at all, no twisting or turning the jewellery, please leave it be so that your body can do its thing and heal it. Bar changes are imperative for ears and lip piercings. Please remember to downsize the bar length at the recommended time as this avoids the angle of the piercing changing.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR PIERCING

  • Gently clean the new piercing with saline solution (Sea salt water soak) ONCE a day, ideally after bathing or washing.

  • Submerge the area in a clean bowl containing saline solution (¼ teaspoon of salt per egg cup of warm water) for a few minutes at a time OR Wet a clean cloth in the solution and apply as a warm compress. This can help to soften any discharge and allow you to clean the entry and exit points of the piercing with a clean tissue.

  • When finished, make sure you are careful to dry the area with a fresh piece of paper towel or kitchen roll.

  • DON’T overclean your piercing, as this can irritate the skin and delay healing.

  • ALways wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and antibacterial soap before touching or washing your piercing and make sure that any clothing and bedding that may come in contact with the area around the piercing is clean.

  • If your piercing does become infected, the surrounding skin may be red and swollen. It will probably hurt to touch and may produce a yellow or green discharge. If you have a fever or any of the above symptoms, see your GP immediately.
